The thermal stage consisted of a copper shroud with a coil of copper pipe soldered to its exterior wall. By pumping liquid nitrogen through the coil, the shroud could was cooled to around -200C.
To perform hot tests, ceramic heaters were installed inside the shroud to heat the unit under test.
The interior of the vacuum chamber was instrumented with a set of digital temperature sensors, to monitor the chamber during operation.
The cage protected the sensors and harness from snagging while the the thermal stage was being inserted / removed.
